New Zealand Introduces Temporary Visa for Seasonal Workers

The immigration department of New Zealand has started a new temporary visa specifically for migrant workers in seasonal businesses in response to ongoing labor shortages in vital areas. This new subcategory of the Specific Purpose Work Visa seeks to provide workers whose job is impacted by seasonal fluctuations with a simplified procedure.

Designed to fit the length of seasonal employment, the visa—which Immigration New Zealand describes as an “interim, time-limited, streamlined pathway”—targets sectors including harvesting, skiing, and tree planting, whose variations depend on the state of the weather.

Prospective candidates have to make sure their employment starts on or before May 31, 2025, and spans no more than nine months. This visa notably does not cover employment in horticulture, viticulture, or fishing crew labor; those sectors are covered by other current visas.

Along with the government reviewing the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), this project is a component of New Zealand’s larger plan to ease labor shortages. The visa is a temporary solution meant to guarantee important seasonal businesses can run without problems all year long.

People who wish to apply have until March 31, 2025. Employers must be certified to qualify and pay a minimum wage of NZD$29.66 per hour for at least thirty hours weekly. Employers also have to post the job before employing, so proof of this advertisement needs to be submitted on the migrant’s visa application.

Designed for people visiting New Zealand for particular events or reasons, the Specific Purpose Work Visa It does not let applicants include dependent children or spouses on the visa application; such family members would have to apply for separate visas.

The particular reason or event for which the Specific Purpose Work Visa was issued determines how long a stay is allowed under it. Moreover, candidates usually cannot apply for another Specific Purpose Work Visa while currently holding one.

Utilising this new visa category, New Zealand seeks to provide temporary assistance to sectors experiencing severe labor shortages resulting from seasonal fluctuations, therefore guaranteeing that important sectors can run without interruption all year long.
