Kenya Makes Travel Health Insurance Mandatory for Eligible Foreign Visitors

Kenya has set a new health insurance requirement for foreign visitors. Eligible non-Kenyan visitors must have travel health insurance for their stay. The Ministry of Health explained how the rule will work in a plan published in November 2025.

The rule is based on the Social Health Insurance Act of 2023. The government says every visitor should be able to get medical care without a heavy bill. Kenya has made it easier to enter the country, so it wants visitors to be covered while they are there.

Key points

The rule applies to eligible non-Kenyan visitors who stay less than 12 months. The insurance charge is USD 50 per traveler, subject to confirmation. The insurance requirement is part of the visa and travel authorisation process, so travelers should plan for it when they apply. Visitors should also check the latest requirements before they leave home.

How long it lasts

The policy covers the whole stay, up to 12 months. For a single entry of up to 30 days, one level of cover applies. For 31 to 60 days, another level applies. For stays longer than 60 days, visitors need international private medical insurance.

What it covers

The policy covers emergency treatment in hospital and as an outpatient. It also covers prescribed medicines, emergency transport to a hospital and the return of mortal remains to the home country. The total minimum cover is USD 50,000. That includes USD 20,000 for medical costs, USD 25,000 for emergency transport and USD 5,000 for returning remains.
