Russia to Introduce ‘E-Visa’ for Indians from August 1, Enhancing Travel Convenience

In a bid to simplify visa procedures and promote tourism, Russia is set to launch its electronic visa system, the ‘E-Visa,’ starting from August 1, 2023. This initiative allows citizens of 52 countries, including India, to apply for an e-visa, streamlining the process of obtaining a visa for travel to Russia as mentioned on the official website.

The ‘E-Visa’ system, established by the Ministry of Public Security of Russia, aims to modernize and expedite visa applications, eliminating the need to go through embassies or external agencies. Tourists, business travellers, and visitors alike can now avail of this digital visa to enter the Russian Federation for various purposes.

The electronic visa, valid for 60 days, requires the visa holder to enter Russia within the specified period. Once inside the country, travellers can stay for up to 16 days, offering ample time to explore the diverse cultural and historical treasures of Russia.

The resumption of the e-visa service comes as a welcome development after it was suspended in 2020 due to the global travel disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With travel restrictions easing worldwide, Russia has reinstated the e-visa to cater to the growing demand for hassle-free travel.

Applying for the e-visa is a user-friendly process that can be completed entirely online. Gone are the days of waiting in long queues at embassies; travellers can now submit their applications with just a few clicks, providing ease and convenience in visa procurement.

Before applying for Russia’s e-visa, prospective travellers should bear in mind the following key points:

Online Application: All foreign travellers, including Indian citizens, must apply for the e-visa through the online portal.

Advanced Application: It is crucial to submit visa applications at least 72 hours before the intended travel to Russia.

Exemptions: Individuals holding diplomatic positions or representing international organizations are exempt from the e-visa requirement.

Visa Outcome: Upon submission of the online application, applicants will receive an email response, indicating one of the following outcomes:

  • Approval Granted: If authorized, travellers will receive their e-visa upon arrival in Russia from the relevant authorities.
  • Travel Not Authorized: In case of non-authorization, travellers must apply for a temporary residence visa at the Embassy of Russia before their planned travel.
  • Pending Authorization: Applicants with pending applications will receive a final response within 72 hours and can track their application status via email.

Russia’s introduction of the e-visa system marks a significant step forward in simplifying visa processes and encouraging international travel to the country. With a seamless and efficient visa application process, tourists and business visitors from India and other eligible countries can now explore Russia’s unique landscapes, historical sites, and vibrant culture with greater ease and convenience.
