Malaysia Opens Visa-Free Travel for Indians Starting December 1st

In a significant policy shift led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian government has announced the removal of entry visa requirements for Chinese and Indian citizens. Effective December 1, Indian citizens will no longer require entry visas when visiting Malaysia. Prime Minister Ibrahim disclosed this development during a speech at the annual congress of his People’s Justice Party in Putrajaya.

Key Changes for Indian Travelers:

Visa Elimination: Starting December 1, Indian citizens visiting Malaysia will no longer need entry visas.

Visa-Free Stay: Indians can now stay in Malaysia for up to 30 days without obtaining a visa.

Security Screening: Despite the visa requirements being lifted, security screening will still be conducted for Indian nationals visiting Malaysia.

Reasons Behind the Decision:

Tourism and Investment Boost: Prime Minister Ibrahim previously outlined plans to enhance visa facilities to attract more tourists and investors, particularly from India and China.

Crucial Markets: China and India are vital markets for Malaysia, ranking as the fourth and fifth-largest sources of tourist arrivals, respectively.

Tourism Statistics: From January to June of the current year, Malaysia welcomed 9.16 million tourists, with India contributing 283,885 during the same period, solidifying its status as a significant source of tourists for Malaysia.

Economic Development: The government aims to simplify the entry process to attract more tourists and boost spending within the country, contributing to Malaysia’s economic development.

Global Trend:

Malaysia becomes the fourth country, following Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Thailand, to announce visa-free entry for tourists. Thailand recently removed visa requirements for Indians from November 10, allowing a generous 30-day stay, with the policy scheduled to last until May 10 of the following year. Sri Lanka also initiated a visa-free entry program in October for visitors from seven countries, including India and China, effective immediately and welcoming visitors until March 31, 2024.”
