Canada’s attractiveness to international students has been on the rise, with a 52% increase in enrollment rates between 2016 and 2020, while the US experienced a 7% decline during the same period. Several factors contribute to Canada’s popularity among global students, including a more welcoming immigration process, affordable tuition fees, world-class universities, and a diverse and inclusive environment.
The Canadian government’s commitment to welcoming 1.5 million new immigrants by 2025 includes recognizing students as a crucial group that brings economic, cultural, and social benefits to the country. Initiatives like the Post-Graduation Work Permit Programme make it easier for students to transition to the workforce and pursue permanent residency after graduation.
Affordable tuition fees are a significant factor for international students, and Canada offers a range of options, including institutions with lower tuition rates. Funding options such as scholarships and financial aid further support international students in pursuing their education in Canada.
Canada boasts world-class universities, with institutions like the University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia ranking among the top 50 globally. The government’s recent investment of CA$1.4 billion in large-scale research initiatives further enhances the country’s appeal for academic excellence.
International students often find a second home in Canada due to its cultural diversity and environmental richness. The country’s commitment to inclusivity is exemplified by initiatives like the LGBT scholarship at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
To further enhance the international student experience, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to introduce a Trusted Institution Framework for Canadian universities and colleges. The framework includes a two-tier model for issuing study permits and aims to assess designated learning institutions (DLIs) against criteria ensuring sustainable intake, genuine student identification, compliance monitoring, and a safe and enriching experience for international students.
DLIs that meet the Trusted Institutions Framework criteria stand to benefit from faster study permit processing, providing a potential solution to delays that students may face in securing their Visa Services. Canada aims to host over 900,000 international students in 2023, reinforcing its position as a leading destination for global education.
